Case Study: I am Hope

Fundraising for Tamariki Mental Health

Partner: Mike King / I Am Hope
Organisation: Gumboot Friday
Project: Limited-edition taonga to support free counselling for young New Zealanders

Background:

In 2023 and again in 2024, Moko Pounamu partnered with Mike King and the I Am Hope charity to support Gumboot Friday, a grassroots initiative that provides free counselling for young New Zealanders.

Driven by a shared belief in the importance of mental wellbeing, the collaboration saw the creation of limited-edition kahurangi pounamu pendants, designed and carved by Moko Pounamu to raise both funds and awareness for the cause.

A Symbol of Light in Darkness

In 2023, the first collaboration produced a limited edition, custom kahurangi pounamu breastplate featuring koru designs. Designed by Susan Aratema and Mike King, this breastplate was  handcrafted by our talented Moko craftsmen, presented in a limited edition box. A breastplate  signifies strength and protection in battle, traditionally going into a physical battle. Mental health is an everyday battle for many New Zealanders and the breast plate shape was chosen to acknowledge this battle and give strength and protection everyday.

In 2024, Each pendant featured a disc of rare kahurangi pounamu, hand-carved with one large koru and three smaller koru. The design speaks to new life, family and home—symbols of support and grounding for those facing difficult times.

The pounamu hangs from a custom silver cord, inspired by the silver underside of the ponga fern, a metaphor for finding light in dark places—mirroring the kaupapa of I Am Hope.

Each taonga was presented in a handmade wooden box, individually signed by Mike King, and is sold as a limited run of 100 pieces.

A Model for Future Partnerships

This collaboration is a prime example of how Moko Pounamu works with organisations to deliver meaningful, high-value fundraising solutions. From design and materials to packaging and promotion, the entire process was aligned with the story and purpose of the cause.

Moko Pounamu is proud to stand alongside I Am Hope and Mike King in their mission to support the mental health of Aotearoa’s tamariki.

“This limited edition pendant is not just a beautiful taonga, it’s a symbol of support, strength, and connection for tamariki facing mental health challenges.”
